ESPN Brings “Mayne Street” to the Web

ESPN.com debuted its first scripted Web-only series this week, Mayne Street, starring Kenny Mayne, who plays himself in a fictionalized story about working at ESPN. The short webisodes have a Larry David feel, which meshes well with Mayne’s quirky, dry sense of humor.

ESPN fans are likely to get a kick out of the show’s premise. The debut episode features an appearance by Scott Van Pelt, who gets frustrated as Mayne keeps messing up the final segment of SportsCenter.

In the second episode, Mayne pokes fun at product integration with a hilarious segment incorporating Louie’s Original roast beef sandwiches. A preview of a future episode shows Mayne interrupting a taping of Baseball Tonight.

The idea for the show isn’t new. Several years ago, the thought was to do the show on TV but the concept fizzled out before Mayne revived it as a Web series. It seems like a good move for ESPN.com so far. Within the first 48 hours of the show’s debut, it already had almost 2.5 million views. That makes it ESPN.com’s most viewed video over the past six months.

New episodes of Mayne Street come out Tuesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m.
