Let It Glow
Graffiti has evolved into so many different forms, yet many still look upon it as being just about a can of spray paint and the urge to deface something. That assessment isn’t even close these days as graffiti tools make the art form more accessible and in some cases actually legal.
Case in point: Glow Graffiti, which is a tool for creating glow-in-the-dark designs and words. The product comes with a special light sensitive canvas on which you can create your glowing graffiti masterpiece. UV light from the spray can makes the special photo-sensitive sheet luminescent. The glowing graffiti lasts for less than a minute and then you’ve got a blank canvas to work with again. So go ahead and see if you’ve got what it takes to be a graffiti guru. In my mind, the coolest part of it is the battery-powered light can. This no-mess high-tech toy will offer hours of fun for the creative-at-heart.

And this is just one variation of graffiti-inspired goodness. Reverse graffiti is another growing genre within this art form.
Founded more than a decade ago by Paul Curtis, a.k.a. “Moose,” this street-art style was inspired by the clean, bright white marks of exposed tile left on dirt and grime covered surfaces. Imagine “wash me” notes on cars but on much larger scale, conveying everything from environmentally-conscious messages to advertising. Moose has worked with the likes of Smirnoff, Xbox and Green Works to create reverse graffiti marketing messages.
Moose describes this form of graffiti as refacing, “not defacing. Just restoring a surface to its original state. It’s very temporary. It glows, and it twinkles and then it fades away.”

From towels to bleach water, reverse graffiti can be created in a myriad of ways. A power washer also works well (I’ve got my initials at the bottom of my old driveway to prove it). With such simple tools, it’s another form of graffiti more accessible to the public. Take heed though. Even though Moose says, “No one owns the dirt,” the legality of this type of graffiti has been questioned at times.
