Discover. Dig. Dance.
The official South By Music page offers band profiles, and in many cases a sample MP3, from the 1750 bands slated to play the industry’s premier annual event next month.
The whole South By experience is about discovery, so it makes sense that the South By site would have much to click.
Here’s a random start to it all:
“Jackson Station” by The Band of Heathens
“Pinkies” by The Big Sleep
“Everyday” by The BoDeans
“I Know You Know” by Susan Cowsill
“Caption” by The Dexateens
“Paper Gown” by Caroline Herring
“Sun Down” by Nik Freitas
“Masood” by The OaKs
“Devil Take My Soul” by Son of Dave
“Faster Than Cars Drive” by Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden
“Snow in Berlin” by Zookeeper
“Treasure” by Papercranes
According to Austin360, SXSW director Roland Swenson said:
In 1987 we had 200 acts and 700 music registrants. That’s an average of 3.5 industry people for every act. This year we’ll have 1750 acts and close to 12,000 registrants, which averages to 6.8 industry people for every act. So you can argue that acts have a better chance of being seen by someone who can help their career now than when we began.

Indeed, its all about diving into the great big pile of unknown. There are sooo many great groups that aren’t hyped waiting to be seen.
Thanks for the heads up!
Paste Magazine has an entertaining take on the growth of SXSW:
“This year there are 1,594 artists confirmed for SXSW 2008. That’s more bands than Republican delegates! If all the SXSW bands formed a political party, they could nominate a president!”
Stumbled upon this. great choices. Oh, and I’m coming down from Seattle. I’ve seen KT and the sons of sweden live. They’re pretty awesome live. The guitar player is a badass. Believe me. much cooler even than the album, which is pretty polished. you should check em out. I’m going to their showcase at The Wave on wed. I think they play at 8pm. thanks again.
