SXSW 2008: The Apps That Bind Us
One of the more engaging and spirited sessions I’ve attended thus far at SXSW Interactive was one titled Breakups 2.0.
With all the emphasis these days on getting and staying connected in the world of social networking, one aspect that gets glossed over is what to do when you have to break that connection. That is, when you want to opt out, disengage and well, break up with someone.
As this was an open session everyone had some great war stories about untangling the intricate and complicated web of interconnectivity that comes with a contemporary relationship. There were questions posed about what to do with that shared Flickr account, or how does one deal with the social ranking of the ex on Myspace or Facebook? Not to mention what to do with all those shared friends online?
This brought up the big question: to delete or not to delete?
The session brought to light many tech-based entrepreneurial implications that are in the works or are already out there to help the wayward heart bear the brunt of these burdens and most agreed that this will be a growth industry as our real life becomes more entwined with the one online. You could almost see the light-bulbs flashing on above people’s heads as they pondered another start-up idea to deal with this new social conundrum.
Keeping the vibe light and fun, Austin singer-songwriter Joey Hardy passed out cowbells and castanets and wrapped up the session with a song of hers that touched on this theme of breaking up 2.0.
